The quantum percolation model of the scaling theory of the quantum Hall effect: a unifying model for plateau-to-plateau transitions

چکیده
We present a unifying model of plateau-to-plateau transitions in the quantum Hall effect based on results from high resolution frequency scaling experiments. We show that as the frequency or quantum coherence length of the two-dimensional electron system is varied, one observes a crossover between classical percolation and quantum percolation in the measured values of the critical scaling exponents of the plateau-to-plateau transitions. This crossover is dependent on the relationship between certain relevant length scales of a twodimensional system and can be explained using a quantum percolation model. The model explains why quantum criticality can be observed in some systems, but is absent from others.

Scaling properties of conductance at integer quantum Hall plateau transitions
We investigate the scaling properties of zero-temperature conductances at integer quantum Hall plateau transitions in the lowest Landau band of a two-dimensional tight-binding model. Scaling is obeyed for all energy and system sizes with critical exponent n' 7 3 . The arithmetic average of the conductance at the localization-delocalization critical point is found to be ^G&c50.506e /h , in agree...
متن کاملNumerical study of the localization length critical index in a network model of plateau-plateau transitions in the quantum Hall effect.
We calculate numerically the localization length critical index within the Chalker-Coddington model of the plateau-plateau transitions in the quantum Hall effect. We report a finite-size scaling analysis using both the traditional power-law corrections to the scaling function and the inverse logarithmic ones, which provided a more stable fit resulting in the localization length critical index ν...
متن کاملA Unified Picture Of The Scaling And Non-Scaling Behavior In Quantum Hall Plateau Transitions
A unified picture of the scaling and non-scaling behavior in quantum Hall plateau transitions is proposed. We show that the interband mixing of states with opposite chiralities and the degrees of the inter-Landau-band overlap are the key ingredients to the problem. We find that the mixing of states with opposite chiralities tends to delocalize electronic states, leading to the formation of exte...
متن کاملStudy of critical behavior of the supersymmetric spin chain that models plateau transitions in the integer quantum Hall effect
Abstract. We use the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) algorithm and finitesize scaling to study a supersymmetric (SUSY) spin chain that models plateau transitions in the integer quantum Hall effect. To illustrate the method, we first present results for the S = 1 antiferromagnetic spin chain. Different scaling behavior of the dimerization operator is obtained for the Haldane phase, t...
متن کاملThe fractional quantum Hall effect : Chern - Simons mapping , duality , Luttinger liquids and the instanton vacuum
We derive, from first principles, the complete Luttinger liquid theory of abelian quantum Hall edge states. This theory includes the effects of disorder and Coulomb interactions as well as the coupling to external electromagnetic fields. We introduce a theory of spatially separated (individually conserved) edge modes, find an enlarged dual symmetry and obtain a complete classification of quasip...
